The choice of foundation method and dimension depends on the foundation conditions and the responsibility for selection rests with the designer.
In practice, three types of column foundation are used:
– use of a prefabricated foundation for the column;
– by calculating and pouring a foundation with a suitable frame on site;
– by digging a section of the column into the ground to the appropriate depth.
The European standard EN 40 suggests the following average sizes for the part of the column to be buried in the ground.

The size of the foundation depends on the height of the pole and the size of the extension arm – crown, the number of luminaires installed and the ground conditions. The depth of the foundation is given in EN 40-2.
